The only thing we were going to suggest at The Lucky Taco was that it would be nice to have somewhere to sit. Then, we read they’d bought some plastic stools and so we can happily announce: The Lucky Taco is basically perfect.

You’ll know of Otis Frizzell, of course – the street artist and sometime television personality and wife Sarah visited Mexico last year to learn about taco making, came home, bought a very fine 1991 DAF truck and converted it. It’s shiny and quite beautiful. More importantly, they came back with a different take on tacos – and didn’t Auckland need it?

They change the menu often, so as well as the basics, you’ll find different tacos on different days – recently, they introduced tacos de lengua – tongue.  They all cost $7 each or $12 for two (eggs in the brunch taco on Sundays at no extra charge). They show most tacos in this town who’s boss. The pulled pork is our favourite – meltingly tender, slow-roasted organic pork, juicy and rich, cut through with plenty of lime and chilli. The fish is cooked just so and the beef – skirt steak – is tender yet full of flavor. There are “special” carrots which are slightly spicy. We also highly recommend the horchata – sweet rice milk with cinnamon ($3/$5). We went last week to try the tongue – it had sold out, more’s the pity. We can’t wait to try it. SFG

HOURS Variable – when they sell out, they go home. As a general rule: Friday & Saturday, 12pm to 8pm; Sunday 11am to 7pm.

ADDRESS Usually at 230 Ponsonby Road, Ponsonby, but check the website for this week’s schedule.

IMPORTANT DETAILS There’s a range of chilli sauces helpfully arranged from mild to hot. We like the house version, made by Sarah.

If the Lucky Taco had one fault, it’s that I litterally can’t eat enough of it. Which I guess is more my fault than theirs.
